I would like to get one of these.
Aethiomastacembelus plagiostoma (Tanganyika Zebra eel)
Aethiomastacembelus elipsifer ( Tanganyika Leopard Eel)

I have done a search and this is the only place so far i could find info on the Leopard Eel

Any of the Birchirs..

I own 2 Senegals, great to watch as they seem to be the most active of all Birchirs, even during the day.

I just thinks its kind of funny, none of the "eels" mentioned are really eels. In fact, there aren't any FW eels.

Untrue. The american brown eel is an anadromus species that lives most of it's life in FW (many migrate to SW to breed, but purely landlocked populations exist all over the place).

True, but I was talking about species encountered in the hobby. There are also numerous elvers that live in FW.

What are elvers?

Elvers are immature eels (true eels; anguilliforms). They're sometimes called 'glass eels'.

BTW- Anguilliforms are catadromous, not anadromous.

I have only owned peacock eels hence my vote. I want to get a tire trake but hear they grow huge so I may avoid it. Any reccomendations on a good eel that stays in the 6-10" range?

My vote it for the zig zag eel! It is a member of the spiney eel family but it stays even smaller then the peacock eel. It will only get to be about 7inches long. I love mine! I am looking to get another eel as well, either another zig zag or a peacock because they stay small. I don't think the school would be very happy with me if I had to house a 3ft long eel like a tire track or a fire eel!!

What's the difference? :read:

They're two different forms of diadromy. Catadromous fishes spend the majority of their adult lives in freshwater but spawn at sea. Anadromous fishes do the opposite; they spend their adult lives in salt water and spawn in fresh.

Love learning new stuff. I actually picked up the term from stripers (striped bass) which spawn in FW and live in salt, so that makes perfect sense.

Stripers also eat these eels like candy, more than ships that pass in the night, eh?

I've only had a peacock eel, but IMO they are wonderful fish to have. Mine has quite a personality and is really active after he gets used to his environment. I'd love to have a tire track or especially a fire eel some day.. but I guess I'll have to talk the wife into a bigger tank for that! :D

Fire eels (http://www.bbayaquariums.com/select-action.cfm?ID=11) rule. I would keep one if I had the right size tank.
