in my brothers messy room i noticed this STENCH so i looked around and saw this betta in one of those tiny bowls
i smelt it and almost threw up. i quickly took action and filled a glass with water got the beta out and put him in the glass. then i threw out the "rotten" water there was so much gunk in the water it was discusting. then i got the biggest jar vace thing i could find i found one (maybe 2 gallons) and filled it with my aquarium water an put the beta in it the betta looks exelent! hes swimming around and not just sittien on the bottom. i am gonna kick my brothers A$$ for treating it so poorly

I buy those little bettas at walmarts that they put in cups for a dollar daily just to save their lives. I usually give them out to friends which do take care of them properly. Its sick of how people treat organisims these days. I signed a district appeal against cruelty to animals in our circut court next month and I also have included Wal-Marts manager in this act along with a few crooked LFS in town. (I hope everything works out for the other bettas out there)

BTW: im trying to enact a animal enviorment ordinance..

Its is.. same for any LFS that has no expierience and is only in the business for $$$. You see dead fish in tanks with others floating, being ate. Or diseases running wild like ich. Its sad, im no tree hugger but fish feel pain just as much as humans. But for me it mainly comes down to if the manager or owner is even TRYING to keep a decent enviorment clean and healthy fed till its bought by the consumer...

The thing that bothers me at WalMart isn't that there are dead fish in the tank, that can happen anytime. It is that when you walk by 2 days later and the same dead fish is still being chewed on. That and most of the tanks are only half full of water. The scoop it out to fill those bags and never seem to refill.

It all depends, I guess, on which employee at Walmart is taking care of the tanks. At the one near me it is the paint counter lady, who just never seems to have the time.

Mantiss-22 I don't know about you, but there is only one good pet store I know of. The other one was shut down-closed the owner just went out of business. And Wal-Marts tanks are really not to bad most of the time. I wouldn't buy from Wal-Mart, but I see them cleaning them fairly often, and most all of the dead fish are netted out at night.

Every walmart I've been into, had cloudy water with sparse populations of sickly looking fish.

I dunno skitty, its bad. Especially if you look on Thursdays to Fridays. Go to look at the tanks tonight if you can or sometime and look at the tank with the clown loaches in it. There has been a dead cardinal laying in there for a week now and loaches have ben feeding off of it, also all of the loaches have ich! Noone bothers to treat and the nets are never washed which sends more diseases to each tank it is inserted...

Yeah you're right. I ended up buying a betta that barely had enough water to cover it up. Called and complained and so did my sister. We are going to check tomorrow if they have cleaned it up any. If not we going after the manager. Call and complain anytime you see something bad going on.

I appreciate it ! The more people we can get to work things up the more attention that will come to it. Do you have msn or something?

Hate to break it to you, but buying the Bettas you see being mistreated in stores like Wal-Mart, etc. only encourages the retailer to buy more of them & mistreat those as well. If the fish don't sell, then the retailer will quit carrying them.

BTW, if you're really interested in/concerned about fish & other animal welfare, it's always good to get active in your local community. I know a group of people who drove a Pet Store (one that sells puppies) out of Champaign, IL by picketing it & going to city council meetings complaining about it, etc.

Yeah, ther tanks at my Wal-Mart used to be decent, but now, just about every tank is infected with ich and has cloudy water. The only things I buy there are decorations, aquatic plant bulbs and tanks.

For fish, I usually go to the Petco near me or this small fish store with a lot of fish to choose from at really good prices. The tank maintenance of the tanks at both of those places are very good.
