I have since discovered that my 26g is actually a 30g breeder tank. I got to the figure of 26g by counting the number of buckets of water it took to fill it - without thinking that the substrate and driftwood takes up space... doh! Don't I feel like an idiot! lol

Anyways a quick question or 3 for the brilliant minds out there...

1. I am considering buying a UV sterilizer for my 30g - Good idea? Bad idea? Waste of money?

2. My male swordtail appears to have lost the entire sword part of his tail. I can only assume that he got too close to 1 of my gouramis as he is avoiding them totally now... He's still very active and appears quite healthy though. Will it grow back or is he doomed to look like a female for the rest of his life?

3. Powerheads - would a small one be beneficial in a 30g tank? Running 2 airstones, temporary canister filter and a HOB filter at present but not sure if the water is circulating correctly...

1. waste of money for that size tank.
2. melafix is good for healing fins, or just keep the water extra clean. fins usually start growing back in a day or two, just watch for any signs of fungal infection or excessive redness in the area.
3. i would go with the powerhead OR the airstones, but not both. on my 30g tanks i run penguin 350's and that provides enogh water movement without anything additional.

waste of money. change 50 percent of your water and vacuum the gravel every week, quarantine new fish ... and you won't need a UV sterilizer. keeping the water clean will also help fish heal fin tears and such.

powerhead OR the airstones
either but both at the same time are probably redundant.
