View Full Version : Tank changed from fresh to salt water??
Currently I have a 55g tank for my 2 oscars. In a few months the oscars will be moved to a bigger tank and I am leaning toward turning the 55g into a salt water tank. Would that be ok or salt will damage it? I bought my tank from Walt Mart so there is some hesitation here.

dont worry, walmart doesnt make the tanks, they just sell them
do u really think they would take a break from trying to dominate the world to make fish tank?

It will be absolutly fine...presuming there are currently no leaks....
What are your thoughts and plans for the new salt water tank? What would you like to keep? just fish and live rock ( FOWLR ) or a reef maybe?

It probably won't be until about July that I can even afford to set up the tank so it is still in the planning stage. If you have suggestions it would be appreciated. It is a 55 gallon I want it to be a community tank and I want colorful peaceful fish. Here is what I had in mine so far....
2 Clownfish
1 Royal Gramma
I was thinking of the yellow long nose butterfly fish because petco told me it would get to 6" but now that I looked it up online it says 9" so I guess I'll keep looking.
A Goby (haven't decided which kind)
As far as coral goes I am completely open for suggestions because I do not know much, as of yet, about it.

Stupid question here...
Your planning to completely tear down the freshwater tank, clean it, and setup a saltwater setup right... cause its not a good idea to add salt to a freshwater tank and call it a saltwater tank...
That said;
Fish often have a variety of sizes that are listed just make sure that your not looking at the size for the "Wild" fish generally dont grow as big in aquariums...
read... learn... repeat...

the long nose wouldnt do well in there they need lots of space and they are hard to keep as well so despite tank size i wouldnt start off with them either.

All besides the long nose would be fine...As long as the tank has been scrubbed in a white vinegar solution, it will be fine..
On the goby side, you could a yellow clown goby, or a watchman. They will add some nice colour to the tank for you..
On the issue of corals, what lighting you use will dictate what corals you can have in there really...
