OK, so I got some gravel from of friends' established tank and put it in filter bags placed near the intake in my tank. I've been cycling for a month with absolutely no level changes. After a week, I believe I'm getting a nitrite spike. Nitrites are either at 5ppm or more. I think it's more but it's hard to tell. My levels are
ammonia 1-2ppm (just added some more drops)
nitrites > 5ppm
nitrates 20 ppm (it's 10ppm out of my tap)
It's a 46 gallon tank. Now how do if that bacteria being built up is in my tank and filter or just what is in the gravel I took? I just confused if I took out that gravel, would my levels go down? When should I remove that gravel? My concern is that the bacteria is more in the gravel than in my tank. Any advice as to how to proceed? Thanks
