Apistogramma cacatuoides is the ideal Apisto to start with. They adapt to most water conditions and are easy to care for. I have articles on my site.

thanks for the tip. how many could you keep in a ten gallon planted tank. the fish information index says to keep 5 females to a male, but I don't think that many would be a good idea in a 10
Oh and what is your site

I probably wouldn't put more than a typical trio in a 10 gallon

Keeping only a pair would be no problem. I do that most of the time.
