hi all
i have a 46g bowfront i would really like to have some discus. i do 30 percent changes every 3 days have two mounted filters ones rated for 60 and the other for 30 both with peat in them. one large piece of malaysian wood a couple rocks and some tall plastic plants. i left alot of open space.
ph 7.8 and the temp is about 84. current fish are a pair of blue rams 3 sterbi corys 5 black phantom tetras (3 more sterbis soon to come).

ok so heres the question can i have 3 happy discus in the tank. i have heard that you need to have at least 6 and i have heard at least 3 and i have heard you can have 1 and have heard that you shouldnt just have but at least 4.

ok so not having owned discus before i am a little confused and it seems as if others are as well. is there anyone that has actually tryed owning 3 that could tell me about it. Any advice at all would be much appreciated.

I have 5 in a 30, and they are overstocked. I'd say 3 in a 46 would do well. However, the trick is constant water changes. Up you schedule to 50% ever 2-3 days. Water does not necessarily have to be soft for rearing discus. If you are going to rear several discus instead of getting full grown ones, be prepared, they would like a beefy feeding schedule, preferably 3 times a day. And all that food should be cleaned out after feeding. I generally leave the food on the bottom of the tank for about half an hour and siphon off the uneaten portions. Anything less than full attention to clean water may seriouly harm your discus.
If you are getting full grown discus, then a normal 2x a day feeding schedule should be fine. Keep the water changes up, and enjoy. With clean water, discus are hardier than most people say.

You can put 4 discus in your tank with ease. Your current water change schedule is great. No need to change anything there...same goes for the temperature. Actually, as long as you keep doing what you're doing you will do just fine with discus. Just be sure to buy them from a good local breeder (try not to buy from a LFS). Oh, and a 2-2.5" discus shouldnt cost you anymore than $20-$25 for most common varieties....use that as a pricing guide when you shop.
