Depends on which. Some will do okay if the conditions in your tank are the same as in your area. Most plants we keep in the hobby are tropical plants and so they do best when they are kept at tropical temps. Main thing I would be worried about is introducing some parasite or other creature into your tank from the plant. So, if it is legal in your area to take plants from the waterways, you could always give it a try and see what happens. Where are you located? Up north or down south. A lot of the plants in the trade are also in the local waterways, some considered serious weeds.

Well, there should be an online database of local aquatic plants in your area. Try google to see if anything comes up. There will definitely be something about specific weeds in the local waterways.

Ok. I wasn't asking what part of Michigan. LOL I didn't even know you were in Michigan. From now on just assume that whenever you get asked that question, by a person who doesn't know where you are located, that they are talking about the US and not a specific state. ;) :p:

Echinodorus tenellus will grow and is found in Michigan, and various Eleocharis (hairgrass) are native and worth a try too.

If you go with things that aren't necessarily native, but grow outside almost anywhere, Lysimachia nummularia is common in flowerbeds and yards too.

I am in Windsor, Ontario, Canada and Michigan is North of me..lol. I have actually put plants from northern ontario in my tanks and had them thrive.

That's what I was thinking... (yes, if you live in Hawaii, Viet Nam, Thailand, Miami etc.).

Actually, there may be a moss or two that can adapt to tank life, but you may have to wait 'till late July to find any. All you can do is try 'em as you find 'em and see.
