Hello all
My dad-in-law has had a 55G tank for years but has been in the hospital and the tank has since been emptied.

I want to help him, but have no prior fish knowledge. We filled it last week and hooked up the two filters. Each filter has a foam insert and little white bags filled with charcoal. They suck in and act like waterfalls to put the water back over the top into the tank. He has about 5 different air pumps in various sizes. No fish yet but I'm curious as to how big the air pumps (cfm)? need to be for a 55G tank?

He had catfish and Pakus (one was about a foot and a half) before and will probably go with those again.

I'm reading about water cycling and daily testing but I've never seen him test his water. He just had hoses all over the place. Thanks.

Air pumps add water movement and oxygen to the tank, but your filters (the little waterfall) does a lot of that also. In a 55 gal tank, I assume he had the air pumps in place to suppliment fish that were far far too big for his tank. Generally, you don't need much,if any air pumps in a well balanced tank. Oxygen diffusion across the top is enough, when the water is moved around by the filters(little waterfalls).

I'd suggest smaller fish rather than the huge pacu and catfish. He might try angels and tetras, and some smaller cats at the bottom, like cory or bristnose. They'll fit his tank better, give him more movement, and show good personality.

pacus will get way to big for a 55 gallon tank... just way to big. they need to be in a tank of at least 300 gallons (and this is a bare, bare minimum). there are plenty of other choices that would allow you to have many more fish.

do you know what brand and size the filters and air pumps are?
