My friend who has had fish for many years just purchased a Copper band butterfly and has had him in QT for about 2 weeks so far. He noticed some white specks that look similiar to ich but never fall off. He says it has about 10 speck or so....A friend of his told him it was Lymphocystis. He treated it with Maracin 1 & 2 and Copper for the last 2 weeks and no change in condition. I told him I would post something and see what you guys thought?

Well, if it's lymphocystis the medications and copper aren't going to help. In fact, they'll make it worse.

Lymphocystis is associated with duress. Copper is an effective treatment for certain parasites because it is only slightly less toxic to the fish than it is to the bugs. If the Copperband really does have lymphocystis, I would not expect it to improve under this regimen of treatment.

Fishes with lymphocystis need a lot of TLC. Unfortunately, the Copperband Butterfly is notoriously hard to keep even when they are healthy.

Lymphocystis is not usually fatal. If the fish will eat, there's always hope. Try some live copepods if everything else fails. If your friend can make the fish comfortable in its new surroundings the lymphocystis will clear up on its own.

Good luck,

Paul
