Hello, as most of the people who come here often and have followed the build of my complete DIY setup...I have been....erm...convinced...to start a Reef log, so people can watch and follow how it is growing, see the things i change, read my explanation to why i have changed them..And more importantly, as i am here for the long term, people can watch me Reef mature...
So, this is my starting point as of today.....

Fishieness

looking good so far man.
how old is it?
what lighting do you ahve over it?
what are your coral plans?

Time to hide that closed loop intake... otherwise looks good.
Reefscape
03-17-2007, 7:06 AM
Hiya Fishieness...its a month or old..in building together terms...In real terms, its a lot longer as everything, besides the extra rock this i cured was transfered over from my other tank, as this was an upgrade, rather than a new setup..Lighting, i have 2 x 250w 10k metal halides and 2 x 45w Actinics...
Coral wise, i shall be splitting the tank effectivly in half. One side is going to be for hard corals, and other is going to be for soft..I am doing this because i want there to a camparison between the two types of corals..Just preference really mate..
Dorkfish...I am going to be making a shroud out of live rubble, put together with epoxy which will then blend in with the rest of the tank, not been from the front and sides and also still allow ample water to be removed from the tank on the closed loop...should look fine and hopefully quite natural when its done...
Thank you for the comments Mods

How much more rock do you plan??? Is your old tank still wet??
Reefscape
03-17-2007, 2:10 PM
hiya mate...probably gonna about 8Kg ( 17lbs ).. about 3 or 4 lbs of that will be used to make the cover for the closed loop pipe...blend it in then....Will more than likely buy the last lot of rock next month and set it off curing for about 6 weeks, or more if needed...
Old tank is now gone, sold it fleebay...got quite a bit for it, more than i thought....
Niko
Lookin' good! Always like reading logs. Can't wait to see your progress.

haha and finally we get the log 8P. Jk man btw nice tank, wouldnt it be nice to be that handy ??? Havent talked to you in some time just wanted to say hi and nice tank. Planning on any other fishies in there? I assume your planning on more coral, heh. I also wanted to say thank you for all the help with my tank, its coming along great. I added my first Zoo 3 days ago, and it now looks great, hopefully it will spread throughout the tank.
Nice tank,

Hello the Roninmagik1...there will be some updates some time next week, not a great lot has changed, there will just be a couple of new addtions to the tank. I dont want to start banging in corals and fish left right and centre untill it has had a good chance to settle...its a new reef and i believe it needs that chance to settle and grow...plus, while i am taking my time, i am drawing out on paper where the two different lots of corals are going to be laid out...Will take some thought...am not a fast mover....lol
Thanks for leaving me some comments mate..

OK Niko, looking good...........But why do you have the tanks heater in the tank and not the sump? I always look to in trying to keep the heater out of my tanks. Of course this was another matter when in my younger years in the hobby for sumps then were not in use, least not here in the states.
If my grandchildren see your clowns, they go and say that you have nemo there. Of course the clowns are captive breed ed?
I know that your two 250 watts MH, only what size is your tank? When you say that this is a log for your tank, that means you tell us all the facts, not leave one single thing out, not unless you want a "ROIT" on your hands.
I seen from your opening photo that your a drain for this tank going under the tank itself, just how is your setup be and please for all the other admires here, don't leave out nothing for slave drivers were nothing, wait and see what's next if you not deliver
You don't want to keep us in the dark now do you?
He wouldn't dare do that too us, he couldn't LOL
Buddy
I'm pretty sure he said on an older thread that it's about 100 US gallons and that the heater was in there temporarily but would definitely be going in the sump.
Hehe, yeah it seems as if a lot of kids (and some adults!) still refer to clownfish as "Nemos."
He wouldn't dare do that too us, he couldn't LOL
Buddy
Now THAT would be a risky thing to do...;)

dont know about Andy but i keep my heaters always in the display tank that way if they were in the sump and the sump failed id still have heat...but now i dont even use sumps anymore...lol
OldManOfTheSea
05-02-2007, 9:04 PM
Germanman, I not can see this for the only thing that can go wrong in that case is that the return pump fails and the heat stays in the sump. This I not ever seen or if I ever heard of it happening before and it not means that it wouldn't.
I guess you got your reasons for not having a sump, this not however mean that you couldn't manage a healthy tank for I seen many that have sumps and they fair no better then the next person. It lies on the personal background experiences of each of us.
Myself however, I prefer a sump and had sumps now for about 45 years now, but not take it at my word on that, for it might be longer then that or few years less. For the time when I became aware of the sump discovery, I not had it until a few years later for i was waiting to see if it was any good first. It were a Oriental fellow who made the discovery by the name of Lee I think and sorry, I not remember his full name.

Well.....As so many of you have been clawing at my back to deliver some updates, plus i just have not really had the time. So here you go, just a quick update to where we stand as of today...
Before i give you death by photo, i shall try to address all the questions people have asked me as the log had progressed..If i have missed anybody's quetion about my system, just holla up and i shall answer them....
justkillin_time - you might have said somewhere else but what size is your tank?
The display tank itself is 84 Gallon and the sump tank is 33 gallons
TomToro - I wish I had your patience, my friend. Planning would have been a good idea for me before I started cementing frags. Didn't I think they'd grow and fight? Frogsqawn next to a montipora, what was I on?
I applaud your forethought!
I believe patience is a virtue in this hobby. I do not believe in rushing anything at all..I know far too many people who ahve gone out, setup a fish tank, whether it be marine or fresh, use cycling chemicals to speed the cycle up and bang bucket loads of fish in there..and they after they have battled with the bio-load, had some fish die and the tank has settled down...they get bored. This is because they have done, within the space of a month, what should be done in the space of at least a year...So, that is my philosophy, take it easy, take it slow and your patience will be repaid by a maturing tank that stable and one that you have taken the time to learn and fully understand.
oddballfanatic - that is such a beuatiful tank nikko!!
how much live rock do you have in there??... i love the aquascaping!!
great job so far and good luck
i have in total, 87lbs of live rock in the tank. The first thing that you will all say is....it dont look like much....Well, actually, it more than adequate to provide the filtration that is required for "this" marine system so i do not have any other method of filtration like cannister filters as i dont believe they are neccesary. Just my opinion..The sump has about 20Lbs of rubble buried underneath the macro alage...

Buddy, thanks for the comments. The heater is still in the main tank, two reasons, i dont really believe it is detracting the looks of the tank..I was going to buy a short titanium heater, but, its just one of them things i have never got around to getting...money keeps being spent on more important things..
The clown fish were brought as a mated pair and were both tank bred. It took me a good while to actually find a pair that were mated prior to purchase rather than introducing two from seperate tanks..Will they breed? who knows..this is marine after all....if only marine fish were as easy a Guppies who are always at it like rabbits...
Yes, i have 2 x 250w (14k) MH lights over the 53" long tank..I chose metal halide lighting, and 500w over a tank my size sort of removed the hand-cuffs as to what i would potentially want to house with regards to corals. I also have 100w of actinic suppliment..i also have a 5w moon light which an LED array and gives a very faint soft glow to the tank when all the main lights are off..
Basically, the drain that you refer too is the exit from the main tank for the closed loop. The first picture is the underside of the closed loop exit inside the tank, and the second picture is of the return pump and return back into the tank where it gets distributed via a 25mm VDL pipe to different areas of the display tank..

Being I not gotten any auto emailing on the responses which were done, I had no idea of the many following comments that were said. And your correct Niko on that the heater in your tank, by all means in no way detracts the tank appearances. I mean that I done it in that way for so many years prior to the sump being invented.
On the two tank system I have, if I were able to best described it, it has much piping that the return pump losses more then half the turnover that the pump is about 1200 gph and I get less then half that. I do hope that I explained that well enough:coffee2:

Yes, this is always a factor that has to be concidered when planning the plumbing for a tank..the more 90 and 45 deg bends that are used reduces the GPH flow rate of the system..I spent quite a while with the head loss calulators planning that part..

It's really coming along! Thanks for the long-awaited pictures. Equipment looks nice and neat and not overbearing underneath- something I have to work on with mine. Skimmer seems to be doing its job and doing it well.
Unforunately, I'm unable to view the picture of the Montipora Digi. Anyone else having this problem?
Was just wondering, do your gobies get along? Do they stay on opposite sides of the tank? And how come Dredge has a name and the "orange spotted goby" doesn't? ;)
Looking good, as always! Any plans on new additions for the near future? What exactly do you have growing in your fuge?

5XEVY...blame the names on my daughter...have had the spotted watchman for a good while now really and she says that she just cannot find a name that fits....its remains nameless..go figure.....
Yeah, the skimmer was like a different bit of kit after i modded the inner tube and cut an inch off it..the output of skimmate doubled....so, i am happy with how its running..
The gobbys get along just fine. They both have their little lairs on the same end of the end..so, there is probably only 6 inches between them most of the time..midday time, they are both out in the centre of the tank..The watchman will purch an top of the rock in the middle and dredge will go about his sifting duties.....
Plans...well, i have already draw out what and where the corals i would like to put....but, i have come to a turning point and i am unsure, as of now, which way i am going with the reef....
In the sump, i have live rock rubble and chaeto for my macro alage....i am curently giving hand full away every other week, just to get rid of the stuf...he he he...but, its a good sign if its growth is good like that....
Will try to repost the pic of the monti, or take another for people to look at at....
Thanks for all the comments El...

Yes, its been a slog, but it has been worth it in the end...thanks for the response on here...It just goes to show what people, who are certainly not DIY experts, can do when we put our minds to it...everything has been built by me, including the display tank. the only thing i copped out on was the sump tank as i dropped on that as a scream of a bargain on fleebay and i just fitted my own glass baffles....

Just saw the new pics. Excellent progress, my friend! Beautiful pictures, but I like the one of the massive amount of skimmate the best. Strange hobby when I've envious of somebody else's sludge:)
I'll check in again soon to see how the 'Great tank from 'cross the pond is doing'.
Take care,
Tom

Woops! Forgot my question! How deep is your sand bed?
The sand bed is average of about 2 inches in the tank and i used aragonite sugar grade reef sand by Caribsea...

Great tank. What does it mean to 'cure rock' Is it necessary to have this rock if setting up a marine tank without corals?
Reefscape
05-18-2007, 8:28 AM
Curing basically means conditioning the live rock to be used in an aquarium. The curing process is basically bringing the live rock, to life....
No, you dont have to have it in a marine system if you not having corals, you can use false decor and external filtration...
Thanks for the comments

Well, people, its been a fun ride....Many ups and downs have been experienced throughout the building of my reef....The main thing that i was proud of, was that it has been a successfull DIY build, everything worked exactly how it should do, never has a single casualty or death throughout it all...
It was a major achievement when i finished building it and plugged everything in, filled her up and watch it all spring to life.....
So, the time has now come for my baby to be moved on to a new home, new owner or owners, someone else to give it love attention as i have done from the drawing board to watching it grow.
Knowing you knowledge drilling people on here as well as i do now, the question will now be raised as to why it is going..Well, a new era is coming upon my life in the very near future...That new era is me starting a new life, away from beautifull England, to somewhere new.
So, i thought it only fitting that i should now bring this Reef Log to a close, for it to go off to the depths of Aquaria Central...
Here is the end of the line....
