I have decided to upgrade from a 29 gallon (saltwater)to a 55 gallon (saltwater). I have a Snowflake Eel. I would like to add some fish, once I get the 55 gallon equipment/set-up. What kind of fish are compatible with a Snowflake Eel? FYI- I like really odd, scary fish, colorful ones are great too. I've never had fish in my saltwater tank.

Also, How do you determine how much you can put in your tank (fish, inverts, etc.)?

I need to upgrade my powerheads as well. How many GPH do I need to push for a 55 gallon? I went to Marineland website and they have powerheads, however they advertise them per GPH. I don't know how to decipher that.

Thanks for the suggestions!

flow depends on what you have in the tank...

Fish only with live rock - 10 x turn over...so, you need to moving 550 gallons per hour

Coral Reef - min 25 x turn over...so, 1375 gallons per hours

Most of water movement equipment that is available will display how many gallons that certain device can move per hour...so, a maxijet 1200, for example, can move 295. so, in a fish only 55gal, you would need two of these and it would give you 590 gallons per hour water turn over...

Snowflake eel will eat shrimp and some small crabs and are also know to go for small fish. I dont know a great lot about them, so i cannot comment any further...

On the fish per gallon question, it is sometimes just based on best judgement..The stocking level of fish has to take all things into concideration like if you have extra filtration etc etc..but, if you base it around 1" of adult fish per 3 gallons of water volume...Just remember though, if you tank is rated at 55 Gal, for example, you dont actually have 55 Gal, probably more like 46 or 48 as you have to take things like substrate and rock displacement...

I am in the same place as you. I have just picked up my 55 gallon. It was purchased to provide for my growing SFE. He/she/it, I don't know how to tell, currently lives with a 3 1/2 - 4 inch long by about 3 inch tall 3 Spot Damsel. Believe or not the Damsel bullies the eel. I'm waiting for the day the eel says enough and shows it what for. Anyway, I am trying to decide what to get to add in when I get the tank running. I have been thinking about getting either a Twin Spot Lionfish, or a Fuzzy Dwarf. I also have interest in the Sea Goblin. Most of the other fish I would like to have will have to wait for the day I get a really big tank. I like a lot of the triggers and I really like the Yellow Belly Dogface Puffer, but they will be for later.

Good Luck with your decision. Make sure you :read: :read: :read: and don't get something that will end up too big for your tank
