View Full Version : Khulis: Black ones live, banded ones die, Why?
I have always had success with black khuli loaches. They live long happy lives. Every time I try banded ones they die. This latest batch I was extra careful to acclimate slowly. First, they hung out in the upper part of the plants and eventually after two weeks they all died. I did not have problems with any other new fish I have put in. Just them. Are they super-sensitive to temperature or Ph or something?

P.S. I love Khulis. It is very heart-wrenching when they die. They are so cool. I want them to enjoy their home and live very long lives.

I have no solution, but I'll commiserate. That's been my experience exactly. Tried three times with banded kuhlis — results were 18 dead kuhlis. For round four, I went with 6 black kuhlis — still have 6 over a year later. I can tell you that black kuhlis are not really kuhlis any more than a zebra loach is a clown loach, and that they have a much broader natural distribution. Probably they're just hardier and can better handle the abuse of the long journey to your tank.
Thank you for commiseration. You did teach me something about black khulis. A long time ago I had the banded ones and they lived for several years. I just thought it would be easy to replace them. No so, I guess.

get a 15 gallon+ tank, get a soft and sandy substrate, life frill plants and drift wood to hide, non flourescent lighting, a temp around 76 deg, a bubbler, atleast three kuhli's+ and blooodworms with algae wafers!
in other words... spoil the kuhli's!
