i have some pond plants that i use in the tanks they are like lillie pads just float on top and cover the top to dulite the water underneath, i have them for the tetras i have they like it , and i have a lot of extras, growing off runners it dosen't take long for them to cover the top just pinch off the ones you don't want to let more lite in if needed, they said they don't flower but mine just did tiny little yellow flowers only lasted for 1 day..

also, as this relates, presume to freshwater, you may find you get more responses by posting in the fresh water products and DIY section...Just a thought...

if they are normal lights ( heat not an issue ), maybe just use some smoke tinted plexi glass..i suppose even some egg crate would help to diffuse the lighting a little bit mate...
Keep the post running in here aswell, as we have a lot of DIY'ers on the marine side who may give some good suggestions...

Depends on what type of bulb is it. If it is an incandescent bulb you can get dimmers at the store. Not sure if they have inline dimmers with plugs, but you could easily take a double outlet box, add a dimmer and outlet, and connect in a power cord to have your own custom made dimmer. Shouldn't cost more than 20-30 bucks.
