I installed a 4 gallon point of use water heater in the basement to warm the new water for my 90G. I set the heater temp at 82, so I can do a 20-30% water change on my tank without making a big temperature swing in my tank.

I have not been able to get the output side of the heater to stop leaking (only a few drips now and then, but ...).

Tons of teflon tape and torquing the connection down, has not solved it.

Is pipe dope a better choice?

Is the connection plastic or metal? If plastic do NOT use the tape. The threads are made to seal shut and expand the further \you thread them.

If metal (anything but black pipe), I prefer the dope myself, but the tape works just as good (2x wraps).

If it is plastic try removing the tape, but the threads may be stretched a bit... worse case if you don't mind a perminant fix use cement! :)

I worry about your use of the word torque and a soft metal fitting...pipe dope may do it...hope you are not into fitting replacement.
