Hey All,

I have an extra 20 gal. long lying around and after looking at all of these fascinating creatures that people have in their paludariums, I have decided I want one!
I would like to have some kind of newt in it, and maybe a frog/toad, and possibly a few fish.

I know about the fish part, however, I am very much a n00b when it comes to amphibians. Which amphibians are best for this type of tank? Which filters and/or powerheads are good ( I want to make a kind of design like this: see attachment)

Thanks!!!
Evan

I just went to my local PETsMART and I saw a Paddle-Tail Newt (Pachytriton breviceps). Wow!! What a cool animal!
What sort of equipment would I need to have one of these in the above plan.
i.e. : lighting, filter, powerhead

Also, are these newts compatible with Fire-Belly Toads? I really think it would be neat to have few of them in with a newt. I know they have mild toxins on their skin, but I was under the impression that they are very mild and don't affect other tank-mates unless they are threatened or attacked.

Oh, and by the way, ignore the measurements. This was a design someone had for a 55.

Thanks for any input you have!

I'de do some research on paddle tails.. they can be pretty aggressive and territorial. Go to Caudata.org and do some research ask on the forums & read up, a 20 long has a lot on space to do some real neat stuff look at different setups, take ideas and make it your own. important thing is to have fun and be creative while creating the optimal habitat for your new pet(s).

No problem, just do your homework, I did 2-3months of research before building my paludarium, I still tweek it every so often putting plants and things.. have fun with it, its addicting!

Also with the above diagram... most newts do not need a heater in fact they prefer cooler temps.

My son had a paddletail for years. No heater needed. Every so often they shed their skin... freaked me out the first time I saw it in the tank.

Hey Everybody!

I went to my LFS today and saw that they finally got some Fire Belly Newts in!! They only have two in, so could I also put some Fire Belly Toads in there? (The 20 gal. long)
Also, what would I need in order to accomodate both species (if only one is possible, though, I would choose the newts.)?

I will be having a land section gradually sloping down into a water section with driftwood, and a combination of live and fake plants.

Any info on Fire Belly Newts/Toads would be VERY APPRECIATED!

Thanks!
Evan

I personally wouldn't mix the two animals. That's how you get newts with missing toes and tails.
