well, my local boys and girls club has a severly OS tank (40G with 7 5-7" goldfish, 4 commons, 3 fancies) which I have been caring for off and on for the last month or so. both me and them know that their tank is very OS, and i've been seeking a home for 5 of those 7 since I first laid eyes on the tank. my LFS says they MAY have enough room to take 5 of them next week, but it's an iffy thing. now, I have a spare 10G sitting around since the FBT that inhabited it mysteriously vanished. I was wondering if it would be at all possible to keep the smallest fantail in the tank, who is about 3", in the 10G tank for 2-3 months until I can afford a 30G for him, and what kind of routine I would need to do to keep him alive.

just want some opinions.

you can safely keep it in a 10 gallon for a couple weeks, as long as you have some heavy filtration.

hmmm... what kind of filter should I have? I could add some java moss for supplemental filtration, but i'm not sure if the fish will eat it or not.

the goldfish is most likely stunted, the ammonia was 2.0 in the tank before I began to care for it. I think it will be fine for a while until i can get it a larger tank, when it's growth will resume. i'll still get a new tank ASAP. if anyone has a spare 30G tank and/or filter they can send me, i'd be very grateful.

unfortunately, I can only get a 10G rated filter for it, but it produces a lot of flow, and I have a lot of java moss in there. i'll probably test every day to determine when water changes are needed.

it's not great, but i think it'll be okay for several weeks- just try and get rid of the fish as soon as you can. being in the 10g alone is still quite a bit better than being in the 40g with 6 others. just stay on top of water changes.
