So my ludwigia repens stems have reached the surface of the water, and I want to trim them and replant the pieces that I cut off. However, I'm not really sure how to do this. Where should I cut? In between the nodes, or right where a new one starts, etc.? And let's say I cut off 1/3 of the stem, will the plant continue to grow vertically or will it stay that height? Will the clipping be able to grow if just push some of it into the gravel?

I pretty much have the same question about the water sprite. Will it continue to grow vertically or will it stay that height?

Thanks for your help.

From my experience with both species. They both will branch off from where u cut it. I personally always try to cut as close to leaves on the remaining stem as possible. Usually new branches sprout from the cut area, bushing out.:look:

I just usually cut about 2/3rds up from soil, just somewhere on the stem. When u plant the cuttings remove 1st couple rows of leaves and plant in soil. Thats all I do.

Cut anywhere above the node of a plant (where leaves connect to stem).
Sideshoots stems will emerge from the node area if you leave the bottoms planted.
Replant the freshly cut top, and it will grow as normal.

This method will work for all stem plants.

thats what i do.

as for water sprite i cut them where there is a root system growing in the water. its kind of like java moss. you could also just cut it almost anywhere. i got mine from a very very small part of one. i thought it was just part that broke off another plant. it fell in and too lazy to get it out. from there it got over a foot tall.
