I have some nice big river stones in my 55g tank with sand and thought it would be cool to grow algae over them for my plecos. Is this possible? i have a small tank to experiment with so i dont kill my main tank.

Do you just want the algea growth on the rocks? If so, you could always isolate them and then add them to you tank later...?

You can always 'grow' algea depending on which type on providing it with what it wants such as proper lighting, oxygen and nutrients. I will see if I can't find a great link on here for algea to help you out. :)

EDIT: Found it http://www.plantgeek.net/article_viewer.php?id=9

Sorry I don't grow plants, or know much about algea, but I'm sure others will chime in shortly! :P

I forgot, but I would also try the plant section in this forum. There are some really good people on this site that can definately help you out.

You bet, and good luck! :D

You want to grow algae... Got to admit, that's a new one. Just kidding. Like ct-death said, light, oxygen and nutrients (and a little time. A very little time it seems like. :mad2: ) and you'll have algae. One thing to mention, depending on your plecos and what algae they prefere (if any) they may eat it as fast as you can grow it. Usually that's a good thing but not here I guess. "Grow algae. The tankers bane... Hmmmm" :) Good luck! Oh, Oh... sunlight. Nothing grows algae like sunlight. It might grow in a few more places then you want it to but...:thud:couldn't resist :)

dose your tank with ferts, and put the tank in a sunny location. you'll have algae within a week.

I think ill setup my small tank near a window with some rocks in it and some form of filter...but what nutrients would it need?

get something like planttabbs or the like.. if its near a sunny window, you really don't even need the ferts, the algae will come on its own. also, if you have something with algae already growing on it, such as another rock, introduce that.

most plecos dont eat much algae. they need other things to feed on. try some zucchini and see how they like it.
