it will come with a little bit of gravel (dry) and a filter and the tank.... i dont want her to just go out and buy fish the next day (which i think she might do) but i will try my best... what should i advise her to get?? i am going to do the maintanence (hopefully) she kept saying she wants golfsih but i think she gets the idea that they are no good (for small tanks). she has had a betta, but i died somehow (i never even knew she had one) and she doesnt want to get another (shes afraid it will die also) im gonna try to get her to go with one betta, anything else that might do good with it? and would a cup or two of my gravel help the cycle much? any more advice? i didnt want to give her a tank but she took me to a fish store and wanted some fish (and i didnt want the worker to sell her a tank and fish in the same day so i told her i would give her one of my many tanks i have (that are empty)... would neons do ok with a betta?

Yes, but neons seem to do better in an established tank.
How about, a few platties? They are colorful and could reproduce, that way she would always have fish.

i know neons are not very hardy, but i wasnt gonna let her get them all at once... maybe the betta, then a few weeks later she could get some neons...what about some zebra danios?

Zebras are hardy little fish ,they should do ok
What about the Betta as the center piece and a nice school of small cories on the bottom. They seem to mix well and both types of fish are sure fun to watch.

To start out give her 4 cherry barbs and thats it, you cant beat the couple of four in a well made 10gl. :)

I have a 10g with a betta, 4 Zebra Danios, 2 Otos, & 1 African Dwarf Frog (not clawed). This tank has been up for about 1 year. Everybody gets along great and the tank is very active.
Hope this helps some.

My 10G contains 6 Tiger Barbs (2 common, 2 semi-albino, 2 blue/green) and 3 red crabs. Sandy bottom, caves made from flowerpots and rocks, and some vallis and bronze bacopa. Certainly is an interesting tank.

i think i should just tell her to get one betta. one betta would be ok by itself wouldnt it? and with just a betta, wouldnt a 5gallon rated filter work?
My Betta (and 1 snail) lives in a 5 gallon with a bubble filter meant for a 1-2 gallon at most and his water has been great for over a month. I do a 1 gallon water change every week. There are also plants in the tank as well. In a 10 gallon that will be very little work with but 1 betta.
