I'm trying to use a "redneck," i.e. 2x4, stand under my 29g tank. I understand about levelling the tank + stand combo with the floor.

What I'm wondering about is, 2x4s being what they are, the surface under the tank edge isn't completely planar. There are places where there are small gaps (by small I mean 1/16" - 1/8"). The instruction sheet that came with the tank says to use cardboard to shim up the stand top until everything is even, but wouldn't cardboard compress over time and ultimately be sort of pointless for that?

What is the best way to make sure there is a nice level planar surface under the tank?

is there plywood on top of the stand or under the tank?if no get a piece of 1/2 ply wood a little larger than the tank you will be fine.

Hmm maybe I will put cork and then plywood on top? Just to be on the safe side. I'd hate for something bad to happen to all that water... ;)

Thanks!

it doesnt have to be 100% balanced. one of my tank is a few cm off and has been fine. the closer you are the better but it still can work.
