my flourescent light is making a buzzing sound

Should I be worried? It's a low bzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Not terribly worried. How old is it, might just be time to replace the bulb, they can do that & even make a visual bzzzzzzzzzzzzz at the end of their life, some can see it some don't. Also have you turned it off & removed it then reinstalled it in case it's come loose from the ballist, over time sometimes this happens, they can just wrk loose, 1 of mine does mostly cause the whole thing is soooooo old, little vibration, little time 7 there you go. Hope this might help:)

If it something that is physically loose on your hood or what have you, then it is a bad ballast, plain and simple.

Bulbs themselves dont buzz, they burn at the tips, or simply dont light, Ballasts begin to hum at the end of their life.
It may still run for many years to come to be honest, but it will be annoying, and eventually get louder until the ballast gives out.

You could continue using it, and see how long it holds out (like i said, could even be years still) But I would still go and buy a new ballast to have on hand for when that one DOES die.

Disregard the above if it is an electronic ballast, i dont think they buzz when they die, or if it isnt an old ballast.

Why does a ballast hum?

Give up?

Because it doesn’t know the words!!!!!!ROTFLMAO!!!!

No seriously, The ballast is just getting old. A/C Current alternates polarity 60 times a second. This changes the polarity of the magnetic coil(ballast) which will make the coil bounce up and down 60 times a second inside the ballast case. As ballasts gets older the hum will become more pronounced. If you decide to change the ballast I suggest you spend the extra money and buy the electronic ballast.......no more hum!!!!

Thanks you guys! It is just a couple of months old. I think uacich was right, it must have just worked loose- I gave it a good whack and it stopped making noise.

Anyway, as long as I know it's not going to blow up or anything. :)
