Question about a filter...

Some of you may remember I started a thread about purchasing a HOT Magnum filter for my 55gal. Well, I love the thing. Think it works great, and have used it both with the Micron filter and packed with assorted other media.

My question is this: every now and then it starts jetting out flurries of tiny air bubbles from the outflow. It's like a mini bubble storm. Is this normal for the Magnums? What might be going on when this happens? Air pockets within the cannister? A seal that is not as tight as it should be? Does anyone have any insight or experience with something like this?

Thanks,

Clankeye

It's possible that any air that is in the tank could be being drawn in thru the intake of the filter & since it such a small amount it takes awhile to accumulate to the point of release thru the outflow in the form of a small burst of very fine bubbles very much like a flurry effect. I say this because all of my tank's that have a good bit of air moving in them also all have very powerful filter's (1/2 dozen or so different type's) on them & they do from time to time the same thing. Don't see this on my HOB's probly cause of the fact they're not as strong & the outflow is spread out & not squeezed out thru a small space w/ great force. Only my canister's & in tank HO's do this. I saw this allot from a Fluval fx5 then I moved some rock around & after awhile I realized that the intake was sort of diffused & not as exposed to the flow as it was before, make sense hope so. So is it possible that there is enough air that it's just collecting then releasing bck out? I know those MAG's are pretty strong filter's. Nothing like answering a ? w/ a ?, LOL:)

Thanks for the responses Mgamer and Uacich. Uacich--you have an interesting theory, and may well be correct.

As I troubleshoot this, one possibility might be that I used the larger round pieces of Biomax in the media I put in the filter. It's not like they are packed together real tight--and just by their design there is a lot of space between them and in them. Maybe airpockets are being created in around these chunks of Biomax and it gets forced out after it builds to a point.

Today I will re-organize the filter media and see if it changes anything.
