hey guys, whats up? i was wondering if live rock curing in a tank produces a strong smell in a room. reason im asking is because im thinking of starting a saltwater tank and cycling it with live rock. i know that live rock does have a smell to it, but is it strong enough to stink up a room? thanks for your time!

my opinion....no....you are always going to get some smell, but nowhere near enough to stick a room out...

The only thing that smells on our reef tank is the skimmer cup. Whew -- don't let that go too many days without a good cleaning. Even then, I have to be standing directly in front of the tank to smell the odor from it.

it can if there is a lot of die off. just open the windows i guess lol...or a water change may help.

Even if it does smell, it's going to be for a short amount of time, I'd think.

Or you could just get some cured stuff and throw it right in. No smell required. :)

When I worked at an LFS we had about 250-300 lbs of live rock curing in an open tub. You had to get your face right over it to smell it. I wouldn't worry about it. You could always throw some carbon in the filter for a couple days to adsorb the odor.

Strange. Curing my LR stunk up the entire downstairs. Although it was temporary, it was strong and offensive.

I second that.it's not a stinky smell..just a very prominent 'ocean' smell..it last a week or so ...

I kind of liked it. Smells like Victory!

100lbs of Fiji uncured in a 50 gal tub w/2 skimmers, 1 halogen shop light and 2 powerheads, 20% water changes every four days or so.

Those were good times.

the amount of smell depends on where u get the rock and the quality.

Mine was pretty high quality but just needed to be cured. I know I didn't scrub as much of the die-off as I should of and that probably had something to do with it.

Although I've never heard of the curing process not having a strong odor.

lol me tooo... when ever we get live rock shipments i emjoy unloading it.. :dance2:

its ammonia your smelling
but the only reason your live rock smells is because you bought it uncured or overseas/shipped.. youll get a strong smell for a week and then it will die down

fully cured rock will (should) have no smell at all

but nothing an air freshener cant cure
