I have only had pleco's in the past, and that was in much bigger tanks. I have a betta all by himself in a 5 gal, and I'd like to add something else to the tank. Being very into bottom dwellers, I'm hoping those may do. I know at this size tank I would need to add algae wafers as there wouldn't be enough for them otherwise. But does anyone with more expereince have any suggestions that could help me decide? Thanks!

3 Otto's would be good with a betta. The betta and the ottos should get along.

Add a large algae wafer every couple of days adn you should be good.

Warning: Ottos are hard to get acclimated. Once they are there for a week, you are good to go.

Thank you for the reply. I was really hoping they would work out. I'm going to start looking around to see if anyone in my area has some good ones!

my betta terrorized the oto I put in with him. I used trumpet snails for algae control instead and all was well.

I don't recommend otos for small tanks because they starve too easily. your call, though

If I used a snail, which kinds tend to stay rather small? I developed a huge phobia of snails when I was younger, and they still freak me out. Yes, I know its stupid and they will never catch me or anything, but I'm not sure I could take looking at a huge snail :)

malaysian trumpet snails stay small and don't generally overpopulate as long as you feed normally. pond snails stay small but reproduce very quickly. Ramshorns, too.

The other benefit of trumpet snails is that they burrow when it's light out and you will rarely see them.

I also have a betta in a 5g. I was advised not to put anymore fish in. If you feel its okay just throw a wafer in every few days.
