...for just one little nitrite.

That's it...just one that registers on my readings so that I can show that this darn tank can begin to CYCLE.

It's been 5 days since the "do-over" and weeks since I've started the tank.

How much longer can I expect here?

Your first "measurable" w/ be Ammonia, then quite some time after this you will notice nitrItes. If you have fish be sure to test for both and keep both within tolerable levels.

If you test for ammonia you should get a reading.

Let us know! :)

I'm getting ammonia readings...always have.

I have to do the water changes to keep this under control, but the lack of any nitrite reading....ever...is bothering me.

Now, it's only been about 6 days now since I had to do the three consecutive water changes at 50 percent to presumably remove the ammo lock I put in the tank, so I figured that put me at ground zero...

What kind of filter are you using?? What temp is your water??

Maybe consider trying Bio-spira and/or some live plants.

I've considered some live plants. I've heard that Bio-spira needs to be put in to a tank that isn't already set up? Not sure if my lighting is right for a live plant thing.

I'm using a Bio Wheel 400 filter and I set my temps for 79 degrees on the thermometer....have no idea how to read the little temp strip on my tank.

Be patient. I've see tanks on fishy cycles where the water changes were done so consistent to keep ammonia at zero, nitrites never registered, and the 'rates just started climbing slowly.

If I remember right, I was on about day 8 when I first started getting nitrites.

What is your water source, and are you treating it for chlorine and chloramine? If you have town water and are not treating, you could be killing off the bacteria.
