I am currently in the process of upgrading my systems lights from t5 to metal halides and i was wondering how high they should be placed above the water.
They are most probably going to be 2 x 150 watts
Thanks

depends on the ficture if they hang then about just enough room for u to work and so that it doesnt heat ur aquarium so maybe 8 inches. if its a sit on top the id space it and if its a hood get some fans for it.

Thanks, im going to attach a shelf to the back wall where my tank sits. From this i will attache the two hanging lights fixtures. That was the reason for the landscaping question as my current rock and coral formation is quite high up on the water.

when i did my DIY build, i purposly made the hood so that i could mount my halides at two heights...12 inches and 9 inches...The 12inch height is for when i install new bulbs and i can give them a run in time for a month and then lower them down to the 9inch level for normal running...I run 4 computer fans on my hood, all sucking in and wired in a temp sensor so they come on if the temp rises to a certain level...
