I can't find consistent advice on the web about Angel and Gourami compatibility. Would a dwarf gourami, thick-lipped gourami and an angel make good tank mates in a 34G tank ?

you may not find consistent advice..generally gourami's tend to be nippy with angels I have also seen it the other way where angels get nippy with gouramis.

much has to do with the temperament of the individual fish.

part has to do with the species characteristics, tank set up etc.

my experience is not to mix the two..but I have never trtied to mix dwarf gouramis with angels.

the dwarf gouramis are generally considered more peacful than the other species of gouramis.

I agree. It varies due to the idividual personalities of the fish... but one must keep in mind that both species, gouramis and angels, are territorially aggressive.

So, for instance, if you had both in a very cramped tank... or added one in months after the other... then there would be territorial disputes as both fish duked it out to have their own niche in the tank or not have to surrender a corner of their turf to the new kid on the block.

So I would think it's all about the wheres and whens with having angels and gouramis in the same tank. 'Where' as in where will they live, a small tank with few hiding places or a larger tank with plants and decorations and plenty for them to avoid each other with. 'When' as in when were they introduced to each other an how? Both added at the same time or shortly after one another? Or were proper measures taken when one was added much later, such as re-arranging the decorations and plants to confuse the older tankmate and help them to set up new territories with each other in mind.

Stick with dwarf Gouramis, they should be fine. REg. Gouramis can be a problem with Angels. I had an Opaline Gourami totally destroy an Angels fins once.
