I put a Percula Clown in my 29g on sunday. He is tank-raised but still pretty small (.5 in). It is eating and looks healthy but is acting a bit strange. He is active, but seems very resistant to leave the surface. He will often swim around with his dorsal fin out of the water (little orange shark). Occasionally he will swim deeper in the tank but it almost seems like he is fighting to swim away from the surface.

Ideas? He is the only fish in there. The currents seem to push him a bit but he can shoot through the strongest of them, and I don't know why he would stay at the surface to escape them if that was the issue.

His color and activity level is great; I just don't know if he likes the surface or there is something wrong.

Any help would be great. Thanks

my two clowns like it at the surface of my tank and are very very active swimmers..

Some clowns can act strange sometimes when they are on their own, they feel lost, if you put another in there i would say its activities will change..

Haha. Sounds pretty normal to me. My pair do the same thing. Most of the time they stay up near my returns and one likes to constantly jump up into my overflows . They really do like to "clown" around, and at night they will lie on their side at the surface of the water.

Atnixon- when did you become a moderator??? Congratulations! I honestly don't think they could've picked a better person in the marine section!

Yup, mine do the same thing. They are goofy little fish. Never a dull moment. :)

I just recently bought two TR clowns, also very small. One is doing great, investigating every nook and cranny of my tank... the other sadly is not doing as well, he is swimming very eradic, he has eaten once, but is now on a hunger strike. He has now taken up refuge in the bottom corner of my tank behind a rock and won't come out. :(

My other clown has the exact same behavior as the rest of the members here are reporting... he sleeps on the surface on his side. He tries to get the other clown in the corner to come out or at least thats what it looks like he is trying to do, but the smaller clown looks scared. I think he may be in shock at this point.

Yeah, my clown is wacky too. Spends lights out time at the top of the tank while the others hide in the rocks somewhere.

Yeah, someone (I think it was JoJoXX or somesuch) had a great idea in one of the first posts I read.

Get a French's mustard container and clean it out. 1/2 fill it with water from your tank. Then get a package of frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and whatever else you want and plop those in the mustard container. Then grab some minced garlic (which my wife had in the refridge) and drop a few spoonfuls of that in there too.

Shake it up and when it's feeding time, squirt a little in the tank.

My fish can't resist, and the current is strong enough that it's in their faces, no matter where they are.
