I watched my Ghost shrimp in amazement this morning as I was feeding my fish. I dropped in some flakes for the general community and a couple of shrimp pellets for the bottom feeders who only get a little time before the top feeders come down. As soon as the flakes hit the water I noticed the shrimp scrambling out to the front. A Molly thats about 8 times the size of the shrimp found the pellet first but to my amazement the shrimp moved in and pinched the Molly on the fin. The Molly backed backed off and the shrimp grabbed the pellet and started to run off but the Molly came back and pecked the shrimp. The shrimp shot off but not before getting a few chunks of the pellet. I know this may be normal activity in a community tank but I thought it was too cool seeing this plucky little shrimp getting his share.

Shrimp are funny little animals. Had a few feeder shrimp as pets that lived for almost 2 years.

I bought 6 ghost shrimp last night for my 10 gal tank that houses my male betta while it cycles. I bought tropical fish flakes for them, since I heard they sometimes swim to the top to feed and the flakes sink eventually. I also heard bettas hate them and was hoping my betta would ignore them so the shrimp could partake. Well I was wrong... I threw a large flake into the water and my betta flew over and gobbled it up!!! what a pig! I thought to myself, so the next flake I broke into little pieces and stuck under the wates surface, the betta tried to catch all the falling pieces but didnt get them all, and the shrimp (while I didnt actually SEE them eat the pieces) ate the pieces that hit bottom. Only way I can tell is, I dont see the pieces on the bottom anymore and I see the shrimp now have bright orange stomachs... haha I love em.

question is, should I feed them specifically, I figure I should since I am just feeding my betta a few pellets and not overfeeding as to have any pieces be missed by his starving glare haha. If I should feed them specifically how much should I give them?
