You should breed whatever species you know really, really well, can provide conditions for, are able to properly feed the fry of, and that you enjoy breeding.

You'll need more than the one tank, though.. you gotta grow out the babies to a saleable size, and that takes room.
No one is getting rich breeding fish on a hobbyist level, so if visions of $$ are dancing in your head- rethink.

You should breed convicts. There are very easy to breed and you could fit a pair in your 40 gallon.

spyderman you should have your head looked at.
you almost have to pay people money to take them.

Yea, it's really important to make sure that someone'll take your fry when they are big enough. It's nice if you get some money for it, but there's no way you'll make a profit, especially the first time.

I also hear that the bristlenose cats are quite easy to breed, some would say impossible not to once you've got a pair. Like the others say though, be sure you've got an outlet for the fry once they're old enough to part with otherwse you'll be inundated(sp?) quite quickly.
