Simulating Species Homes

heya guys,
im looking at some species to breed, but i duno how to simulate their environment.These fish come from the Peruvian Amazon where they live in shaded jungle waters (neon/ cardinal tetras).
i was wondering if anyone can help me out please

Do you already collect rainwater? That's a start. Distilled water by the gallon--where could you get some? What Australian dried tree leaves would you use for leaf litter? Yes to tannins. No to terpenes like eucalypt oils. Can you get plain peat moss at the garden center in bales?
