We feed our Africans a combo of lettuce, spinach, zuchini, flakes, and then they steal nibbles of the shrimp pellets meant for the pleco.

the JD's get flakes, cichlid and shrimp pellets, and bloodworms

the jewels get flakes and bloodworms

One question, will all cichlids eat lettuce or green vegetables? Im looking for a cleaner alternative to falling flakes or pellets..

i feed all my cichlids veggie mix flakes every morning before i go to work and and whole big shrimp every afternoon when i get home.

if you havent tried feeding your cichlids whole shrimp, i would try it out. they absolutely love it. its kinda expensive (unless you get the hook up, like me and a friend of mine) but you are assured to be feeding your fish the real deal.

Are frozen baby shrimp ok? We have plenty of that around here and it should fit well in their mouths. Any precautions or anything I should do first before just throwing in frozen food in first? Should it be thawed? And should the shell be removed?

i just take it right out of the freezer and thaw it in a cup of warm water for about 15 min., break it up a little and feed away.

leave the shell on the shrimp, it is a great color enhancer for the fish. some fish dont like to eat it. if they dont then they will just spit it out.

Shrimp is a brilliant food not only for cichlids but a lot of other fish as well if you cut it up for them.
Most fish i have kept go crazy for it.
Cheers.
