In one of my tanks I have a few shattered pieces of clay pot around a nest and on the other side I have a large clay pot with 2 entrances. I have a fake plant but im going to move it soon. I think it obstructs the cichlids vision during feeding time, with the plant gone I will probobly just add another clay pot as a cave? Think this is a good enviorment for these guys?

Make sure there aren't any sharp corners or edges the fish can hurt themselves on.

maybe you can try sand as gravel for the african tank

they like the pebbles alot... As for the "sharp edges". I file the edges of everything in my fish tank before I add it

i have never raised africans myself, but there are some in my local doctors office, and he has a few plants in his. and personally i love the touch that a live plant gives to an aquarium

i would say thats fine so much as you have lots of rocks. in their natural habitat there are rarely plants and in most "themed" tanks the africans have just rocks. with either sand or small pebble substrate.
