Well, I decided to setup my spare ten gallon fish tank as my first ever SW fish tank. here is a list of the supplies that I got.
I ordered this skimmer

this light

this substrate

this thingy to purify the water before I mix it.

This thing to attach to the skimmer
http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewItem.asp?idproduct=OE1138
bought this powerhead locally

bought a heater locally
will buy rock locally
bought salt mix locally
hydrometer locally
testkits locally

Am I missing anything? I was planning on running the tank with the skimmer as the only external filter, and just using sand/rock for the bio load, but the guy at the LFS looked at me kinda funny when I told him that, he said that having another filter would be better.

Oh, since I know you'll ask, I want to stock two ocelaris(sp?) clowns, maybe a firefish, and a couple of anemones, there isn't much for corals around here, but you can be sure I'll be coming around posting pics before I buy, and asking advice.

anyother suggestions on a tank that size? stocking? equipment? words of caution? anybody want to call me an idiot :duh: ? I don't care, let me have it!

beautiful tank! is the feather duster the only non-fishy thing you have living in there?

theres nothing wrong with just running a skimmer and using live rock, and powerheads to circulate the water, this is called the Berlin Method. I have been using this type of setup since October, with no problems. He was probably getting funny cause you was'nt going to buy nothing from him.

i forgot to add, tap water filter, from what i heard are not very good, can be expenive to replace. Better of with a RO or RO/DI unit.

eh, too late, I've already used it. and there's no way I am going to invest in an RO unit for just this little ten gallon tank. I myself have also heard mixed reviews, but I figure that it's better than nothing, I bought 4 extra filter cartriges for it, and I run the water through it at half the speed it suggests.

tomorrow I am going to purchase live rock, I've got the tank setup with the water circulating right now, the sand is in the tank.

I still have to figure out exactly how to use that skimmer, it came with very little in the way of instructions. I know that there isn't any bioload right now, so it shouldn't be producing skimmate. It might take some tinkering.

gangstafish, I can see that you have one of those fission nano skimmers in your 15 gallon tank, do you like it? my choices came down to that one and the taam rio nano skimmer that I bought, just curious.

do not get the fission nano skimmer whatever you do, its litterally you get what you pay for, invest in an aquaC remora nano protein skimmer, your better off spending that 30 dollars on a good quality salt mix

The only thing I'll add is if you're not going to use R/O water test the water that you sre going to use first. I was of the same opinion as you and used tap water for 2.5 years and boy did I suffer. The main thing to test your water for IMO is all the usual & phosphates.
