I am moving in a couple of mos, and when i do I am going to turn one of my 55 fw tanks into a sw tank. I am really thinking of getting a protein skimmer for it, just to help with the maintanance. Just wondering what (affordable) protien skimmer you all recommend. I want a good one, but can't shell out big bucks for one. Just thought it would help maintain the 55 a lot better... (correct me if I am wrong.....!)

Do you plan on having a sump? This would let us narrow it down to an in sump or HOT skimmer.

I do not plan on having a sump just a HOT skimmer. I will probably use the skimmer along with my penguin 330 filter I already have for the tank.....

If you plan on having a good skimmer on this tank, I would recommend the aqua c remora pro. They are expensive, but IMHO they are the best HOT skimmer for a tank your size. Other recommendations I've heard would be the PM HOT skimmer and turbofloter also makes a good HOT skimmer. You can go cheap with a prizm, but IMHO it is not able to properly skim a 55 gal tank. You could also look at the cpr bak pak, but I've heard that they are only effective on tanks of 40 gal or less.
