Hi, Geoff here 90g Cichlid aquarium. I found the forum while looking for advice for my Jaguars. They(7"&4") made a "nest" and laid eggs which hatched on Friday. The fry are no where to be seen... Can I assume they are hiding under a rock somewhere? or have they been eaten? The parents seem to have reverted back to pre-mating behavior and are not as aggressive.

Thanks.

Geoff.

Hi geoff, I'm no expert but from what i've read the parents sometimes eat the fry the first couple of times. They should figure out what there ment to be doing and hopefully next time take better care of the fry. I have a breeding pair of kribs and the first time they ate the fry but now they are great perents.:)

It wouldn't surprise me if they were a snack.

the behaviour of the parents is usually a good predictor of the presence or absence of fry. while it is common for first time parents to eat the fry, it's also common for them to 'move' them around the tank and hide them. when the latter is the case though, you can usually observe the parents hovering about the fry in 'guard' mode.

I would be to worried yet. My convict laid eggs once they hatched and i couldnt see single fry for the life of me for like 3 days. Then when lookign very very very closey between gravel i saw movement. The parents had burried them in between the gravel. I would say that if you fish are still guarding the area where the eggs were laid then they are still there, if they are swimming about like nothing then they might not exist anymore :(
