anyone have any suggestions on what fish can be kept with because i had a golden cichlid in with them but i lost 2 Jd 's .. I think it was because I had 2 male JD's and 1 Female but also the golden chichlid.. was it because they were trying to mate and the aggression got to high and fought to death ? any input would be welcome plz

Jack Dempseys are not named after a boxer for no reason. They are very aggressive cichlids and are best kept in either a single species tank or with other large, aggressive cichlids. But first you need to answer a few questions: What size tank were these four fish being kept in? Also, do you know more about the golden cichlid that you speak of?

oops

JD's are South American cichlids and are only supposed to be with South American cichlids(New World) and golden cichlids are Malawi mbuna cichlids. African cichlids are only to be with African cichlids. And they are supposed to be kept in tanks no smaller than 55 gallons when you first start out with cichlids. And if you have say a 20-30 gallon tank (way too small) the JD's were probably killed because of the golden being very very territorial. Had nothing to do with mating. Mbuna's are very aggressive when it comes to their territory. Even if it is one cichlid. Do you have rocks and plants? Need more info on the tank you have on what size it is and what your parameters are? then we can help you more thoroughly:bday:. plus the ph ranges are sooooo very different. jd's have an approximate pH of 7.0 and goldens are 7.6 pH. but google and find out more info.

its a 55 gallon and yes i have places for them to hide example caverns clay pots etc plants included .. from what people have told me is that they are aggressive but can be with others depending that fish ... but all i need to know is was it because of mating or jus to much aggression for 1 tank?

yes i know more about golden chiclid and that they are very very very aggressive fish. but people keep saying they should have been fine because of their temperment...
