Do you think an arrowana (of the same size) would be a suitable tank mate for a Tiger Shovel Nose Catfish ?

Hmmm. I know nothing about arowanas, but I have a shovelnose, and he shares the tank with a pleco and a good sized synodontis eupterus. What do you feed your SN?

In their natural habitat they share territory with The Red Tail Catfish and Dorado. If that helps.

Dude! An Arrowana would be great for the fish. Perhaps another Arrowana would be good for the display. But a Pirarucu would be "FREAKING" better. How big is the tank.

The tank is 200 litres (50 gallons). The SN is about 20 cm. I'll probably have to move him in about 12 months.

I would guess that you are right...they need a 90 gallon tank as they mature.

How big does a TSN get?
Aren't they rather slender? And an RTC is a big fat body that will eat anything in its path? Although at one time, I owned both fish (RIP Sparky, the RTC, 3.5#, 21" long) I never would have considered putting the shovelnose with her. I don't even trust my marbled pim anymore. There's a link for that - let me go find it.
Found it - complete with picture

He now has his own tank, and his former mates are QUITE happy!

The largest TSN that I have seen in a private aquarium was over 36". It was housed in a 8' X 4' X 4' tank (by itself).
The one I have is a Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum.
But yeah, I think a RTC would probably be meaner. Not sure if I would risk putting them in the same tank though. Even if the tank is a big one.
When you had yours, what was your tank size ?

At the John C. Shedd Aquarium in Chicago they have in a the "Fishes of the World" tank the largest one easily over 1000+ gallons 3 Pirarucu's,4 Green/Black???Pacus (Huge! there Width are very impressive), like 4 RTC's, and two TSN over 3 feet. Plus large Plecos, Geos, and Doradids.

I am actually researching a large cat for my pond. I love the rtc (they are gorgous), but am a little worried since it is a tropical pond and I will have some balas. Also, plan on a red pacu. Would I be better off with a TSN? Any other ideas?

We will probably end up going with an rtc. The pond is still pretty new and we haven't decided on everything for the stocking yet. An ID shark will be going in there for sure.

an rtc would be way cool in your pond, tank mates are more vast than you may think... im my 400 gal tank i have an 18" rtc, 13" pacu, 18" clown knife, 7"in red devil, 7" mangunese {spelling may be off} and a soft shell turtle about the size of a cd. i plan to buy a large tsn and a pecock bass in the future... hehe i like a lot of fish that are big and stuff.

Now, I am leaning towards a giraffe cat. However, I have a bird problem so will have to wait till I can get rid of them.

I've had problems with birds as well. Ended up covering my pond, which kinda detracts from the visual effect of the pond.
I'm interested in any solution that you may be thinking of, hopefully not requiring to cover the pond.

I am going to try one of those fake alligator heads. My problem is with cormorants. I hope that helps, I really don't want to cover my ponds.
