View Full Version : Stupid TN Weather and My Pond....

Ok, so it's been in the 80's during the day, nights in the 50-60 range. I didn't/don't have a deicer, so they went inside into an aquarium for the bad part of winter. So, I put my comets back outside in their pond last week, and they are loving it. Now, we're getting a cold front tomorrow night-it's April....and the nights are going into the low to mid 30's, and one night so far showing into the upper 20's.

I have a submersible heater from one of my larger aquariums, can I use this at night to keep the water from freezing, if it drops that bad? I know it's not large enough to heat the whole pond(it's only 90 gallons), but should be good enough to warm the water up a bit (?). Can't bring them back into the aquarium, because I just relocated my rams into that tank.

Any suggestions? It's a 90 gallon, one of those plastic formed ponds. Probably about 1 1/2-2 feet deep I would guess. The sun warms it up a bit in the day, so I'm guessing just needing the heater for the evening. Thanks for any help you guys can give!!!

You could cover the pond with black plastic over night to retain heat.

You could add large air stone and pump to keep water agitated over night

You could use your heater , hopefully 300 watt over night .It will most likely stay on all night.

Thanks elks!! Appreciate your response! I don't have any large enough plastic to get it all, but it does have a water fall and another spout thing, so there's good agitation going on-at least once I drain out some from the rain last night :)

I'm just being a big wuss about the whole thing, my fish are Florida fish not used to cold winters lol. I know it won't freeze all the way down. I'll probably just use the heater, just to keep the top from freezing as well. Thanks again!!
