I just got back home from taking my father to the hospital for a very long stay. He was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic syndrome 2 weeks ago and needs chemo and a bone marrow transplant. He will be on and off in the hospital until the beginning of September.
Myelodysplastic syndrome is a pre-leukemia. It has not progressed into full blown leukemia, but they are treating him like he has the full blown disease. He will get one week of chemo, then blood transfusions and tests for the 4 weeks following. Then he will come home for a month while they look for a marrow donor (either his own cleansed marrow, his brothers, or marrow from the national bank). After this, he will go back into the hospital for another round of chemo and then the transfusion. Hopefully this will work and he will not have a relapse for the rest of his life. He is 70, but a very healthy (other than this) and active 70. He is scared, but his attitude is positive.
He is also in one of the best hospitals in Philly, so I know he's getting A-1 treatment.
Thanks,
Michele
