I just got back home from taking my father to the hospital for a very long stay. He was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic syndrome 2 weeks ago and needs chemo and a bone marrow transplant. He will be on and off in the hospital until the beginning of September.

Myelodysplastic syndrome is a pre-leukemia. It has not progressed into full blown leukemia, but they are treating him like he has the full blown disease. He will get one week of chemo, then blood transfusions and tests for the 4 weeks following. Then he will come home for a month while they look for a marrow donor (either his own cleansed marrow, his brothers, or marrow from the national bank). After this, he will go back into the hospital for another round of chemo and then the transfusion. Hopefully this will work and he will not have a relapse for the rest of his life. He is 70, but a very healthy (other than this) and active 70. He is scared, but his attitude is positive.

He is also in one of the best hospitals in Philly, so I know he's getting A-1 treatment.

Thanks,

Michele

Thanks all. I know he'll pull through. This is his 2nd bout with cancer. He had bladder cancer (determined to be from years of smoking) 10 years ago, and made a full recovery. But that didn't involve chemo. I think that's scaring him alot. He sees other patients on chemo on his floor, and they are really weak and sick. He knows what's coming....

Thank you again:)

Michele

Thank you. I'm a little worried about him today. They think he may have pneumonia now. That is not good in his condition.

They can't start him on chemo yet. Every day they don't start, the disease progresses a little further. Very frustrating. And I'm sick and can't go to the hospital to see him....:(

I really don't know what too say, I lost my father two years ago to cancer when I was 17. We are also from up in new jersey, small world. Its nothing easy to handle, but know that god would not put this fight in front of him if he couldn't handle it.Thats why there are options for you're father, Gods just testing him. My dad wasn't given the opportunity for any treatment. It was just his time. The way I see if god needed a good carpenter up there to help remodel his kitchen,LOL guess he got tired of doing all his own work. I have all the faith in the world he will pull through and make a great recovery. You are all in my prayers on this easter weekend.
