View Full Version : picture of a possible convict?
hey guys, i bought what i was told is a convict, but after researching them on the internet for a while, i have yet to find a pic of convicts that look like mine. mine are young though and maybe 1.5 inches. i cant get a great pic, and i think my best one is the one of me holding it in the net. thanx guys. i only held him about half an inch out of the water, and he was only out for about 5 seconds.

try taking a picture of him in the water because thats how everyones sees their fish as no one really takes the fish out of the water to take a pic. this way we will be able to see correct finnage, coloring and body features.
i doubt it is a convict because of the green colors but that may be from the picture being taken out of water. also by the body size and shape it looks like some sort of american cichlid, my best guess at the current time would be a green severum (sp?).
definately green severum

Carpinti, texas or a juvie sunfish of some sort is also possible.
Intank picture will be able to determine things better.
i will try again with an intank picture, although with it being a big tank, the fish are hard to get a pic of.
heres a better pic. he usually has more defined stripes though.

It is definately not anconvict. Looks like a green sevrum which is worth2-3 times a convict! :)

Yes .... BUT it also can get 3 to 4 times the size of a convict.
This could cause a problem if caz doesn't have a suitable tank, or tankmates for that matter.
so definately a green severum then huh? poop, i bought two of thouse, 4 bucks a peice, 2 oscars, and one jack, all when they were tiny. i have always wanted the severums, but they do get big, and the reason that i wanted convicts was because of their small but feirce stature. how much would they be worth do you think?

with the new pics u postes i can tell you that it is definitely a green severum. which may be good they are fairly tame and like to stay in the middle to top areas of the tank, they get around 8-10" and should have a neutral pH.
** by the way what size tank are they in?**
$$ => they are worth more than convicts i can tell you that much.

Small green severums are not worth much, they are too common. Not as common as regular convicts, I suppose. They should get along great with Oscars.
im not too sure as to what i will do with them. i have been keeping an eye on the sevrums fromt he first time i got into fish keeping. right now they are in a 55 gallon, keep in mind that they are all very small, the largest being about 2 inches. i am trying to get a pair of oscars to breed, but i dont think that i will have much luck. i have two little ones now, and if they dont pair, i will give one back. as far as tank size though, they have plenty of room for now. i have a jack in with the two oscars and two sevrums, and he is not growing fast at all. so i might bring the sevrums and the jack back, and stick to oscars, or possibly get an electric blue jack, although i dont know much about them yet, except that they are really pretty. anyone have any suggestions? i would like to keep my 75 gallon tank, but i think i would be willing to go bigger. i have had an oscar for over 3 years and he is only 9 inches so the 75 suites him well.

I would get rid of the Oscars and keep the Severums. They are way less messy and also don't get nearly as big. They have much slimmer bodies and 2 would be o.k. in a 55.
thanx guys. i brought it to my lfs and he confirmed that it was definately a green sevrum. im not too sure what i want to do now. luckily i caught it while all my fish are young.i had originally hoped that my two oscars would pair up, or when they get mature enough one of them pair up with my 3 year old oscar. think i will have any luck on this? if not, i will probably get rid of one now, and keep the other.

if you have an oscar at 9" and two others at 2" and you want to get a pair with the big one i doubt it would work because the old orcar would probably reject the smaller ones because they will always be smaller that the big oscar.
even if the big one is a male(not that i know or anything)? my bigger oscar is kinda funny. its over 3 years old and not even 10 inches. it is not aggressive at all, and is in with fish half its' size. its even a hard time to get it to eat feeder fish.

I think your caps lock key is stuck =p
I agree it could be a severum, it also looks a little like a sunfish from the pictures.
not sure where texas and carpinte came from they dont look anything like this fella.
From the marking on the severum, it is pretty good quality. Once that severum grows up, it will look stunning if taken care of properly.
I can't say for sure that is GREEN severum from the color of the pic. Also the fish being still too young to tell for sure that it is GREEN.
Severums might be very common, but they have different sp. For instant, RedHead Severum isn't very easy to get a hold of, unless you know someone who has them. There are some other severums that have amazing coloration and possibly can't find them in LFS.
Same with Convict. Standard Convict just have gray background with black stripes (can find in any LFS). However, Archocentrus sp. 'Honduran red fin' (convict) isn't as common even though they breed like crazy like any of the standard convict.
