hey,

Before you read, I am NO cichlid expert, having never owned one and hardly ever come into this forum.

i saw a malawi tank on the net and thought it would look grouse in my bungalow, ive read up on all the water requirments for the cichlid species, and tomorrow will begin work on the background for the tank, as it needs to be rocky, to simulate the enviroment of the rift lake.

Now i like the all the really bright colourd pretty fish. like the electric yellows, they are a pretty fish, and those blue and black striped ones. the reason i have decided to do cichlids is i have always liked them, and wanted a tank loaded with brightly colourd medium sized fish, unlike neons which are colourful enough but are to commen and small for me.

So basicly what im asking is, wat setup could i have that would have really bright colourd fish, and turn heads at the grog-ups i have down there.

the tank is a 50 gal

If you want to have a black ghost knife fish (Apteronotus Albifrons), they can't be in a tank with african cichlids. The pH of the bgk is only 6.5-7.0, and the majority of african cichlids pH ranges go from 7.4-8.2. You can, however, have South American (New World) cichlids. There are a variety of South American cichlids that are just as colorful. The bgk comes from the Amazon and Paraguay Rivers. They can grow as big as 1' 6". And they have to have a tank with really good filtration and a minimum 50 gallon.:read: :dance2:  . You can google the bgk or the scientific name for more info. Hope I helped ya a little....:)

well ill probably dump the bgk and just keep goin with the a few rift lake cichlids what are more colourful fish that i could put in there with them? guarami's?

not so much the gourami - same water probs with compatability as the bgk.

once you go for the right lake cichlids that's pretty much the pool of options you're working within - but that's no limit at all in terms of colour.

from lake malawi= electric blues, blue peacocks, yellow peacocks, moorei cichlids, red peacock, albino peacock, acei cichlid, cobalt blue, red zebra, venustus, compressiceps, blue johanni, fuelleborni (orange blossom) bumblebee cichlid. plus you can also do cichlids from lake tanganiyka and kribensis cichlids. there is an endless possibly as to what cichlid arrangement you want to do. my sig. shows the cichlids i have. they even have lemon cichlids. bright yellow (a little lighter than the electric yellows. you can go to cichlids.com or rkdzines.com/cichlidcellar and see pix of all kinds of cichlids and to see how colorful they are good luck :dance2:

yeah they can bc they are from lake malawi also

we have 2 pink kissing gouramis in our 80 gallon bowfront and everyone said it wouldnt last but almost 2 months later and they are still kicking.

Pelmatochromis kribensis ? Oh...I thought they were from Nigeria & Cameroon
