I have a well established reef tank with 3x angels, 3x tangs, pair maroon clowns, marine beta and 3x damsels all is going great I also have a selection of soft corals and anenemies I would like to try some hard corals but my local dealer advises against mixing hard and soft is he correct? if not any advice for a first hard coral

There are no issues at all with mixing hard and soft corals. My new reef that is maturing is going to be a 50 / 50 mix of hard and soft...just keep space between them..

A few nice starting ones are something like a favia brain, acropora and montipora.

I am not in anyway an expert on SW, but I have seen many tanks with nice mixtures of hard and soft corals. Seems odd that he would be against it.

His reasoning was the depth that hard and soft corals live at hard nearer surface lots of water movement soft deeper less movement

I can understand him saying that, but it is down to the tank owner to position them in the tank, depending on what coral it is...there are no issues with mixing them at all...

That's the right idea for the wrong reason.. soft corals get less water movement becuase they live in "lagoons" wich are sheltered from storms, etc. by the reef front (an area of the reef that is dominated by SPS corals). However, as niko said, just positions your corals and power heads strategically and you shouldn't have a problem.

Just curious how your corals have been since you switched your lighting to the MHs? Are they finally getting used to it?

This sounds like a nice set-up! Have any pictures you wouldn't mind sharing?
