Trying to change medea for first time. Cant get the head off. Am I doing something wrong?

On the outlet side of the canister (TOP) ,after you have unhooked the unit, take it to a sink or grab a towel to wrap arount the outlet tube. Next open the outlet valve, you may get a little water surge. That's it you have just released enough pressure to pull the top of the canister off. Hope that helps.
