hey all, I am just a week from purchasing my aquarium. I've done much research around these msg boards.
my plan is 35 gallon amazon biotope. I know 35 is small size for angel fish, but i will upgrade when my angels get bigger. the angels i will buy are only 1.5 inches so it will be a while til they get over 3 inches. plus i do not plan on out growing my angels quickly. I want to make my aquarium as natural as possible. realizing the fact fish in nature arent fed 3 times a day. I want to add about 5-6 baby angels + 15-20 cardinals or neons. yes, i do realize my angels will outgrow the tank and i do realize that when they get begger, my cardinals might start disappearing, and yes i will upgrade.
i am going to hit 4.2watts per gallon. diy co2. or new product called fizz box. its bascially a tablet that creats co2. my tank is going to be definitly heavily planted. 4-5 amazon swords will fill the tank.
my equipment is quite simple:
35 gallon
tronic 150 heater + back up heater (will be set a tiny bit lower than tronic)
aquaclear 300 + HOT magnum. (both set to mininum intake of water. i need 2 filter to swap clean filter sponges, keep bacteria in tank from 1 filter at all times)
with little waste from fish, mechnical filteration wont be at much demand.
I will vaccuum the gravel every 5 days or so. 15% water changes or as little water as need to take out all the stuff in the gravel.
as for my plants, my aquascaping will be random for more natural look. walnut 2mm gravel. fertilizer tabs near roots.
a few ottos for algae.
am i missing anything or doing something wrong?
i havent forgot to cycle my tank.
questions:
1) will seperately acquired cardinals or neons schoal together? if i buy 5 now, 5 later, 5 after that so on, will they school together?
2) i know tetras schoal closer when they have much more open space and when frightened, how can i allow them to schoal closely or is it impossible in a planted tank where the fish will feel secure?
3) if i plan to establish plants first then skip the cycle, how slow do i exactly have to add my bioload? i am pretty sure that 5 amazon swords growing uncontrolablely with 4 watts/g +co2 can handle bioload of 2 angels per 2 weeks? or i could be stupid on this one.
4) is it possible to grow plants well in pure sand? (considering less air will go to the roots therefore encouraging rotting?)
5) at what age do angels sexually mature and ready to breed?
thanks. long post. thanks for help
