View Full Version : Do you do anything to support the bottom of your tank?

In what may be a rather interesting parrallal thread, I suggested pouring candle wax on the bottom of your tank flush with the frame. That way the wax serves as a mechanical support between the glass and the thick plywood under the tank.

It's an issue with me because this tank is ageing, and has no crossbraces (90 gallons).

I think styrofoam won't compress enough at the edges to actually make contact with the bottom of the glass.

Can you guys share what you do, if you take steps to support the bottom of your tanks?

I don't do anything to support the bottom of my tanks. I figured that if that were important, tanks would be made such that the bottom glass would sit flush with the frames. Also, look at commercially made stands. I've never seen any that support the center of the tank. I presume the glass is sufficiently strong to carry the load.

Just my opinion....

Agree completely w/JSchmidt. Tanks are engineered to have the glass suspended above whatever supports the frame. That is done with good reason, to protect the glass from pressure points from below. Don't try to second-guess the engineers. There is no reason to do so, and some degree of risk from so doing.
