This stuff seems to have killed a Cory catfish and a flower shrimp.

Then again, I stupidly did an initial dose of twice the recommended amount.

Does anyone know if this stuff kills?

first time i ever heard anyone making this claim. some people put 2-3 times more then the bottle says will no ill effects.
The only other thing I did was do a partial water change, then add the Excel and a little iron for my new plants.

Water parameters are perfect.

The only other thing I can think of is my tap water dropped to a pH of about 6.5 when my tank was 7.4 due to a bit of crush coral in there. That couldn't have been good either.

And the cory catfish was new, so it was week from the move.

could be a combo of factors. some times its really hard to tell.
The cory was found dead with a red patch behind each of it's gills, a little bit above the very bottom of the belly. It was new so I'm thinking of taking it back.

I don't usually kill fish and freshwater plants are all so new to me.

(I'm a Rift Lakes and marine kind of guy.)

I have read about people doubling + the dose of Excel to kill algae. There was a long thread about it on a plant forum. No one reported fish deaths or adverse effect on behavior of their fish.

I started using excel about three weeks ago, and so far the results for my plants have been benefical with no ill effects that I have seen for the fish. If your cory was new to your tank, I would think there might be some other explanation than Excel.

I have 3 timed the dose with excel daily for a week, and had no ill effect on plants, shrimp or snails, or most fish.. however I did lose a few Corydoras sodalis because of the overdose for so long. My skunks, paleatus and albinos were all fine, but sodalis didn't fair to well.
