In my discus 55 gal, I keep it at 85 degrees and I wanted to start with some easy low maintanence plants that I wouldn't need any C02 injections , and preferably they didnt need any different light then my basic 40w flourescent. I got some Amazon swords from petco for very cheap (the kind in the aquagel) but from what I understand they need 5000-7000k lights, so they probably wont last long although they're native to the Amazon like the discuses.
Would java fern/ moss be ok for this particular temperature, gravel substrate, and lack of CO2 injections. Adding liquid fertilizer would be no problem for me, but other then that I just didnt want to go overboard with all the extra work and expensive C02 units and new lights. So is it possible under these circumstances to get some nice plants to grow?
Im still in the process of trying to learn about live plants and very new to them, so please pardon any ignorance on the issue I have.

Java moss and Java fern are fine at that lighting level and they do not get planted into the substrate, so no problem there.
I think 85 is too warm for Java Moss, but I think Java fern would do okay.

Try various crypts. they all work great in warm water and low light. Anubias also works great.None of them need co2.

I used to have amazon swords in a tank with stock hood light they didn't die but slow growing. If you use some nutrient enriched soil that will help.

Well its been about 4 days and the Amazon Swords are surpisingly looking good, green and no dead leaves. They're only in plain gravel, but I did add Plant Gro after I changed the water and put them in. I was expecting them die by now, maybe they'll make it a little longer.

if you haven't tried this already buy seachem plant tabs and bury them at the roots of the swords they will really love it cuz they need good ferts. in their substrate. Most swords use up a lot of nutrients so they deff. need substrate ferts. Also as new submerged leaves grow pick the old emeresd leaves off.
