i want to have cardinal tetras with angel fish, but everyone says they will be eaten by the angels somewhere down the road. whats the possibility that a cardinal tetra will be eaten in a 55g planted tank? can i prevent it from happening? my plan was to have the angels in the tank last because they will establish their territory. so ill put the cardinals in first and in a week ill add 3 juvi angels. since they will grow up together..will the angels still think of cardinal tetras as food?

Though there some who have gotten away with it in the right tank, my experience has been they shouldn't be mixed.

I would say you have more of a chance of the fish being eaten down the road if they are neons.

Yep, I agree with DD on this. Adult angel + neon tetra=Angel gets expensive snack ;)

Adult cardinals stand a better chance than the size they typically sell in the LFS. I've seen them with angels in a planted tank, and the cardinals were kinda big to be eaten by the angels.

It's a crapshoot. Establishing the Cardinals first (so they get bigger), having a larger number (schooling defense mechanism) and having lots of plants and structure would all help.

I have cardinals with an angel in my 55 going for a little over a year and the angel barely notices them.

My Angel is around 6 inches tall and the Cardinals are an inch to two inches long. I had the Angel in the tank first and then added the Cardinals after a couple of months. I think the Cardinals were about an inch long and the Angel was about a half dollor in in size. I have even added Cardinals after 8 months in the tank. The Angel was around 5 inches tall and never attacked the smaller Cardinals.

I also have to adult Angels with 18 cardinals (some big some small) in a planted tank. The Angels don't even bother the cardinals. They like to stay near the male angel.
